Paula Kovarik Workshop – At Play in the Garden of Stitch

September 13, 14, and 15, 2024 (Friday through Sunday)

Registration opens: July 15, 2024 @ 10:00 a.m.

Cost: $350

Covid Restrictions: None at this time.

Paula Kovarik creates art with stitch and fabric. Her intuitive line work travels the surface of her work as if a meditation has become solid. Inward thoughts become outwardly apparent through slow and studied attention to detail. I tell my story through the medium of quilted textiles. The contrast—a strong line against a giving surface—captures what I know and must say. She is interested in how we communicate with each other—leaders to followers, poets to people, the loud and the silent. From electronic signals to sidelong glances, they all intrigue me. I look for the uncanny in life. It’s as if there is a secret code I want to decipher. A book, a headline, my garden, a muttered oath all bring inspiration to the cloth.

In this class Paula will guide us through her approach to using stitch in artwork beginning with an expressive line. Loosen up and explore new territory with line and stitch in this free-motion quilting workshop. Learn to focus on the character of line and personal symbols through simple drawing and stitching exercises. Participants will accumulate a toolbox of techniques for seeing, interpreting and completing concept-driven work. With a focus on generating ideas through research and observation, build your stitching vocabulary and trust the thread to tell your story.

Kovarik’s award-winning fiber art has been recognized by Quilt National, Quilts=Art=Quilts, World of Threads, and Fiber Art Now Excellence in Fibers exhibitions. She has been profiled in American Craft and Fiber Art Now magazines. Her work is featured in Art Quilts Unfolding – 50 Years of Innovation and Art Quilts International Abstract & Geometric. Kovarik shares her ideas and techniques in workshops and in her book, At Play in the Garden of Stitch. Her work has been collected by the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, NE and the International Airport in Memphis, TN as well as several private collections. Kovarik lives and works in Memphis, TN.
