The Workshop:
In this workshop, participants will explore quilting as an expressive, sculptural practice–one that embraces cutouts, openings, and unconventional form. Using free–motion stitching as a drawing tool, we will focus on creating rich, tactile surfaces with depth, rhythm, and visual energy while emphasizing experimentation, process, and intuitive decision–making. Participants will also explore alternative piecing and construction techniques that expand the possibilities of quilt–making beyond traditional approaches.
Together, we will challenge the conventional boundaries of quilt composition by designing pieces with irregular forms, organic edges, and intentional negative space. These openings become active elements within the composition, creating contrast, breathing room, and a dynamic interplay between presence and absence. Through demonstrations, discussion, and hands–on exploration, participants will develop new strategies for composing with stitch, space, and form–and discover fresh possibilities for what a quilt can be.
