Susie Monday, “Digital Beyond Photos”
When I move through the creative process for a textile collage art quilt, I dance with color, line, shape and rhythm, my strong suits as both perception (input) and making (output). At age 12 I announced to my parents and the world that I was an artist because my uncle and aunt gave me a real artist’s palette and kit — one of those wooden art boxes with lots of colored pencils, watercolors, even oil paints. (My parents privately agreed that they would no doubt have to support me the rest of my life.) That artist self found a meandering path thought a studio degree in fine art, into arts and education, as a journalist and food editor, a museum program and exhibit designer, working with clients, teachers, parent and kids, until 20 years ago when I realized that if I didn’t stop and take stock and work for myself as an artist I might let life just slip by without finding my own voice. And, doesn’t it? With fiber arts I have found a niche and media that allows me almost any tool, almost any material, and a world of improvisation. I still walk a tightrope between words and images, and in the past 5 years have become more and more enamored with using digital tools to design fabrics and art quilts. I teach both in person (when possible) and online, with courses on using an iPad as a textile artist. — Susie Monday
