Aliza Lelah – Remnants and Recollections

Aliza Leah lives in Denver and teaches at several colleges and universities in the northern Colorado area through online classes.  She received her MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and also studied in Vermont and at the Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy.  She has exhibited in solo, two-person and group shows all across the country – particularly here in the Denver / Boulder area.  She has collections on exhibit at Children’s hospital in Highlands Ranch, CO; Art Bank in Washington DC; Rosewood Gallery in Savannah, GA; and SCAD University in Lacoste, France.

The reinvention and recreation of remembered imagery is made present through recycled fabric, her pigment, and stitching, her binding medium.  In her work, time is a non-linear event which is given life by both the figurative images derived from found photographs, and captured memories of past events from her own
childhood. Stories blossom from this relationship. Old photographs reveal evidence of a past presence. They are records of historical details once a part of everyday life that are visually lost without their recovery in the snapshots. The worn fabrics belong to the same language of experience, exposing the value of memory for the present, in layers of existence. This work investigates the transformation from contemporary society into tangible recollections. The transcription from time into space and in time from past into present recalls the treasury of remembrance.
