Talk and Trunk Show:
An inspirational and informative slide-show and lecture starting with Susan’s first fabric experiments of thirty years ago, when she began to combine fabric and art. These early projects led to her fabric collage method that began in 1990. The slide lecture traces this progression of Susan’s quilts to the present day, with insights and stories for each. She shares techniques and hints for design, fabric selection, construction, borders, and quilting. A selection of quilts will accompany the slide presentation. A question and answer period follows
About Susan: Susan’s art touches people in important ways. Her pieces help expand the definition of quilts from craft into the realm of “Art.” Students have said that her classes free them up artistically. They’ve been able to take something that’s been in their head and manifest it into art. Susan has been creating art with fabric since 1983 while attending the Maryland Institute, College of Art. In 1990 she drew on her collage skills, making small quilts to sell. Susan started to teach her fabric collage process in 1994 and slowly the teaching overtook the production of pieces for shows or galleries. These days she concentrates on making the quilts “she” wants to make, for herself, unless they’re commissioned. Susan developed her own technique of fabric collage quilting which is explained in depth, in two books: ”Free-Style Quilts” and “Serendipity Quilts.”
