Judith Garnett’s work has explored a diverse range of media, but she always return to painting for her core inspiration. A few years ago she felt that her paintings were calling for something more. So she cut some unsatisfactory paintings from their frames and began to stitch them with her sewing machine.
Judith’s latest work is mostly abstract, in bold colors, and focuses on line, shape, texture, and geometry. It starts with canvas painted with fluid acrylics and latex paint that is cut apart and sewn back together, and then painted and stitched once again. Some of her work features non-typical materials—repurposed and recycled elements like coffee bags and packaging, industrial waste and metal bits—pushing the boundaries of the definition of an art quilt. Judith’s work has been exhibited widely, including many SAQA exhibitions, and at Visions Art Museum. She lives & works in Portland, Oregon.
