Artistic impulses lie unfulfilled\, dormant. For some\, at a certain point\, there comes an ache in the bones\, a deep longing for creative expression-a simultaneous sense of emptiness and overflowing feeling. \nThis was the case for the author\, Janice Mason Steeves\, who left a career in psychology to pursue art in her forties. She went back to school\, graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design\, and went on to develop an international art career\, an art consulting practice\, and a highly sought after travel workshop business. Weaving together insights from her own art experience with the stories of 128 artists over the age of sixty\, whom Janice surveyed for the book\, Bloom offers guidance\, inspiration\, and support for the often difficult and misunderstood desire to change trajectory and take up a path of creativity and meaning. \nMason Steeves then takes these observations a step further\, suggesting that not only is it possible to come to art later in life and be successful as an artist\, but that the distillation of life experience and self-knowledge gleaned from the artist’s path may enable older artists to step into an even larger role: that of a community elder. DESCRIPTION:Mary McCauley – “Fabric and Form: Vessels”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Fabric and Form: Vessels” Workshop \nSeptember 17 and 18\, 2022 (Saturday and Sunday) \nWorkshop Description: Old and new\, familiar and innovative\, building on the past and exploring the unknown – these are the successful themes that form the approach of our workshop. Inthis workshop we put old\, familiar skills to use in creating new and unique art forms. We will learn about using fabric to make vessels or “textile sculptures”\, then design and construct our ownnew vessels using a simple\, systematic process that allows for a great range of invention. 2 days\, max class size 20. \nOutline: Class members will design and create a 3 dimensional vessel or form\, using my step-by-step process. \n\nIntroduction to 3 D fabric structures\, examples and inspirations\, discussion of 3 D design elements\, symmetry/asymmetry\, opportunities and limitations presented by fabric medium.\nDesign work: sketching the form\, creating a template on paper\, planning the construction sequence.\nConstructing the panels\, embellishment and “polishing the pieces”.\nAssembling the form\, putting the pieces together\, wiring technique.\nFinishing touches: Creating the base\, labeling\, final embellishment.\n“Accessorizing”: storage/carrying box\, photography tips.\n\nFor more information visit https://www.artquilters.org/mary-mccauley/
