Denise Labadie – Five-day Art Quilt Design Intensive Workshop
About Denise: Denise is an accomplished quilter and instructor who enthusiastically, energetically, openly, and warmly shares her knowledge, and her design and color sense, without reservation. Denise’s sewing and quilting experience and knowledge (which includes both contemporary art quilting and traditional patchwork) is both deep and wide-ranging, and she has proven to be uniquely capable of helping her students better understand and use both new and traditional fiber art and quilting techniques.
Denise uses a wide variety of colors, fabrics, threads, and yarns in her work, and then constructs her quilts the same way as a stone mason builds a wall – individually sizing and cutting out, piecing, and appliquéing each stone, one by one, working from the bottom up. In contrast to the realism of the stones, the skies and landscapes – which are central to the context of place and the timelessness of these sacred sites – are far more abstract. Denise uses multiple layers of sun-reactive transparent Seta color paints, plus various resists, in combination with folding, twisting, wrapping, bunching or pleating of the fabric, and the application of sand, different types of salt crystals, sugar, dirt, – basically, doing or using most anything that can influence or cause differential paint absorption, diffusion, blending, patterning, or mottling.
Denise uses selective combinations of multiple appliqué techniques (reverse, turned edge, and raw edge), insetting, free-form strip piecing, couching, and “thread shadowing” (similar to thread painting) – plus an occasional dab of paint – to achieve her trademark quilt top textures, lighting, depth of field, and shadowing and perspective. Throughout, full attention is given to proper craftsmanship, “sweating the details”, and technique precision.
Denise started art quilting in the early 1990’s, and now focuses on her art full-time. An internationally recognized and published fiber artist and teacher, she has been a featured and solo exhibitor – and instructor – at major exhibitions in the US, France, Spain, Italy, China, South Korea, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands. She is also a multiple Quilt National (USA) award winner – both People’s Choice and the McCarthy Award for Overall Craftsmanship.
Her “stones” portfolio now exceeds 50 quilts, and she continues to look forward to discovering and visiting new sacred sites, meeting new stones, and quilting their stories.
The Workshop: Denise’s Art Quilt Design Intensive workshop focuses on teaching her approach to composition, to fabric painting, and on helping her students gain a hands-on understanding of the comparative effects, strengths, benefits, and use – basically, the “what, why, when, and how” – of alternative quilt top construction and finishing techniques.
Denise’s workshops are highly interactive and very hands-on, and are focused more on the development of participant creativity, confidence, and experiential exploration and learning than on rigid, one-size fits-all lesson plans or patterns – her goal is to teach re-useable and replicable techniques and “lessons learned” that each participant’s own creativity can confidently expand on once away from the classroom. Denise’s classes are fun.
