Cartoons, juried by Joan Sowada

Thank you to all who entered our first virtual show!  We had 11 entries.  For all virtual shows I will ask each juror to select 70% (or less) of the images received, and to select a juror’s choice award.  Both of these requests make the experience of being a juror a lot more like the real thing!  Each juror is allowed to show one of their own works of art that fit the theme.

No matter the theme of a show, a juror is also looking at the elements of art!  In addition to evaluating the content and style of the work – humorous or satirical drawing, silly or serious, doodle or caricature – I was also looking at composition, color, line, values, and repetition of shapes.  Picking a favorite was difficult! Herd Immuni-TREE gets my jurors choice award for the cartoon show.  It is strong artistically, using a nice combination of colors and good value contrasts.  I like that it is both silly and serious.  Congratulations Linda Grey.

I liked the distorted and exaggerated figures of On a Wing and a Prayer and Iraqi Mother, by Keri Mills.  These two also have great compositions.  I liked the lyrical quality and repetition of shapes in Dancing With Matisse, by Roberta Weadley.  I liked the bright color and fun sentiments in Fishanistas Out on the Town by Anne Severn and All Dressed Up With No Place to Go by LaVonne Dunetts.  I liked the contrast of simple line figures and butterflies, with the vegetation fabrics in Sayonar Amy and Mota, by Meredith Brooks.  In my own piece, Love, I like the sentiment as well as the elements of value contrasts and pleasing composition.
