A’donna Richardson – The Documentation of the Migration of African American Quilts
A’donna was born and raised in Washington State and served almost 25 years in the Air
Force as a Budget Analyst. After retiring, she became a quilter and within a few years
her interests expanded to the study of quilts and their ties to America’s social and cultural
history. She started collecting and studying antique quilts, quilt patterns, and quilt
documentation publications. When she realized the last quilt documentation project for
her state did not cover African American quilts, she founded the Washington African
American Quilt Documentation Project (WA-AAQDP). The project’s goal is to find and
record Washington State’s African American quilts, the quilt makers, and their
stories. This has become an ongoing project to ensure the data collected is cataloged and
preserved for inclusion in the Washington state archives, and the next statewide quilt
Her presentation will cover the quilt documentation work to date, to include how it
began, the progress made, the challenges, and where the project is headed. She will
reveal some of the quilts found and their stories. A’donna’s work has led her to examine
if there is a correlation between the Great Migration and the quilts uncovered. Her
discussion will include an analysis of the African American migration patterns in
comparison to where the quilts originated from and when they arrived in Washington.
