Janice McDonald – Contemporary Collage: Thinking in Pieces

Janice will talk about collage as an art-making medium, collecting and working with repurposed materials, re-imagining elements, working abstractly, and why she most often produces works in a series.

“An indefatigable collector of obscure and overlooked materials, I rip elements of color and texture from their original context to re-use in my work. These salvaged fragments are then scrutinized, pushed into relationship with other pieces, perhaps altered or cropped, and eventually transformed into collage or assembled compositions. Fresh imagery with new associations and layered undercurrents emerges as a result of engaging with, and resolving, these puzzles of my own making.”  –Janice McDonald

About Janice:

Janice earned a BFA in design from Oregon State University and now splits her time between collage work and her graphic design practice. Janice’s collages usually incorporate found/discarded materials and are unique in that the paper elements are torn rather than cut. Her work has been included in exhibitions around the US and internationally. Interested in all forms of collage, Janice is a signature member of the National Collage Society and helps moderate an online group for the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction. Janice has been affiliated with Spark Gallery in the Arts District on Santa Fe in Denver since 2010. Her collages are included in the collections of the Adolph Coors Foundation, IMA Financial, CoBank, Beaver Run Resort, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, Denver Health, and Denver Seminary, among others. She documents her studio/process on instagram @janicemcdonaldart.
