Sara, Melody and Rob will talk about their experiences being part of the SAQA exhibit “The Stories of Migration”. This show brought together many artist’s visions of Diaspora. It showcased the many ways migration affects the lives of people worldwide. Although migration is a current relevant issue, it has long been a part of the history of the world. Many artists chose to share their personal experiences, while some interpreted the concept on a broader level. This SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) show that was hosted by The Textile Museum and George Washington University Museum in Washington D.C.

Melody Money’s piece, Sky Prayers- Memory of Sky was inspired by the many people of Tibet now living in exile.

Rob Bein’s piece, Boat Traveler, was inspired by seeing photographs of so many people fleeing their war torn countries by boat, capturing feelings of vulnerability, precariousness, uncertainty and fear.

Sara Rockinger had two pieces in the exhibit:

This Land, depicts the migration history of North America, from the Native peoples of this land to those brought by force, need, or choice. For better or worse, North America is made up of dispersed populations and continues to struggle as a result.

Invisible layers thread, fabric, form, and imagery to create socially relevant figurative work. She is interested in how global social issues and daily life intersect, overlap, and become stitched together through shared human experience. This stems from her need to understand what it might be like to be someone else.
